The number of foreign nationals legally working in Croatia is going to hit a record high. By mid-May 2022, the Croatian Ministry of the Interior has issued 45,829 permits. Last year, this number was only reached in the middle of summer.
According to the Ministry, as of the beginning of August 2021 about 46,000 third-country nationals had obtained permits, of which 22,799 were in the construction sector and 12,396 — in catering and tourism services.
This summer, Croatia is estimated to face a shortage of around 30,000 jobs. During the period between 1 January and 19 May 2022, 13,035 residence and work permits were granted to foreigners in the hospitality industry, and 20,219 permits were distributed to construction workers.
