According to German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, in May the number of Ukrainian nationals seeking refuge in Germany dropped to 2,000 people a day.
This is a substantial decrease from 15,000 daily arrivals in March 2022.
Nancy Faeser believes that most displaced Ukrainians will return home. “Some will stay if people see the chance to find their feet in the German labour market with their qualifications,” the Minister said.
On 14 May, the German Interior Ministry released a report showing that national authorities had registered more than 700,000 Ukrainian refugees since the beginning of the war.
It was agreed that Ukrainians fleeing the war should benefit from the Hartz IV welfare/unemployment program to the same extent as German citizens.
Hartz IV provides for an average monthly allowance of €400 per person. This means that refugees from Ukraine will soon be entitled to this amount.
