This means that Ukrainian nationals fleeing the war are no longer required to have relatives or friends in Japan to enter the country.
Ukrainian refugees will land in Japan on a short-stay visa, which grants residency for 90 days. Each application will be reviewed individually.
“We will flexibly respond to evacuees’ visa status, sufficiently taking into consideration their situation,” Justice Minister Yoshihisa Furukawa said to the press.
If they are willing to stay in Japan for longer than three months, Ukrainians can change their status to a 1-year Designated Activity, which allows employment.
