Turkey introduces residence quotas on foreigners

Effective 1 July, Turkey imposes quotas on residence permits for foreign nationals.

The number of residence permits issued to foreigners will be limited to 20% of the population of certain neighborhoods nationwide, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said, according to Hurriyet newspaper’s website. Thus, 1,200 districts will close for new residence permit applications.
The move aims to placate public discontent over the presence of about 3.7 million Syrian refugees who are perceived as taking jobs away from Turkish people. The growing anti-refugee rhetoric has encouraged the opposition seeking to oust the president and has become a major political issue in the upcoming election.
